With your See Tasmania Smartvisit Card, you will receive FREE entry to the Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum.
On picturesque Low Head peninsula at the mouth of the Tamar River is Australia's oldest pilot station. The pilot station has been in continuous use since 1807. It is a delightful collection of cottages in a beautiful setting. The Maritime Museum occupies the 1835 Pilots Row, the oldest
|
and largest building on the site. It tells stories of shipping on the Tamar River, and has relics of the days of sail and steam. Following your visit to the museum, continue on to the headland. Pass the cable staion, once part of the telegraph link between Tasmania and Victoria.
Further on is Australia's third oldest light station, with its grand light house and the only operating G-type fog horn in the Southern Hemisphere. It sounds at noon each Sunday. You can also see one of the replica semaphore masts, which relayed messages between Low Head and Launceston until 1858.
The Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum just one of over 60 attractions that make up the sightseeing pass known as the See Tasmania Smartvisit Card. This smartcard allows you entry and special discounted offers to this attraction and many more. |
